Running
DOS Versions of
PROBID,
PROBILL,
PROCOST,
PROVAL, and
PROPLAN under Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP/Vista
The MS-DOS versions of
PROCON's
software packages will run in terminal modes in all versions of Windows.
If you install the program using the provided Windows
installer - or the command line INSTALL.EXE - a desktop shortcut is created to provide direct access to the program.
More knowledgeable Windows users can modify the properties of this desktop shortcut to improve - or optimize - the performance of the application running under Windows.
To modify the Properties of a Windows
2000/XP/Vista MS-DOS Program Shortcut
-
Right Click on the Program's
Desktop Icon
-
Select "Properties"
from the Context Menu
-
Select the Screen
tab
Select "
Usage
- Full screen" (unless you have to run
the program in a "Windowed" Window)
Uncheck "Performance
- Fast ROM emulation" (this usually
makes little difference)
-
Select the
Misc
tab
Uncheck "Foreground
- Allow screen saver"
Set Idle
sensitivity to Low
Check "Background
- Always suspend"
Check "Termination
- Warn if still active"
Uncheck "Other
- Fast pasting"
-
Select the
Compatibility
tab
Uncheck "Compatibility
mode - Run the program in compatibility mode for ..."
Check all three options under "Display
settings"
Check the one option under "Input
settings"
-
Select the
Memory
tab
Set "Conventional
memory" to Auto
Set "Expanded
(EMS) memory" to 2048
Set "Extended
(XMS) memory" to 2048
Set "MS-DOS
protected-mode (DPMI) memory" to 2048
Set "Initial
Environment" to 4096
-
Select the
Font
tab
Select "Available
types - Bitmap only" (unless you do not
have a suitable range of bitmap font sizes)
Chang the "Font
size" selection to maximize the Window
size without creating scroll bars
(Note: These font settings only affect Windowed modes - not Full screen
mode)
-
Save the changes by
clicking OK.
These settings should provide good performance in
most circumstances.
Alternatively, download
this typical program shortcut file, copy it to the Windows
desktop, and edit the
Properties, Program tab
settings to show the correct
-
Program
name,
-
Cmd
line
-
Working
directory, and
-
Icon
path.
